Been here many a time with the family throughout the years (probably 20 times in total), and as it was my nans favourite ever hotel, who has sadly passed away. So I decided to treat the wife to a night away, as I’ve been promising her for 7 years to stay here, with the tip of the hat to my late grandmother. I booked on the Monday, as we had a engagement party within walkable distance to the hotel, and thought I could kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. Had organised for the kids to be looked after with their grandparents 40 miles away in north wales, and was really looking forward to a night away, as many parents would. Only to receive a phone call today, 24 hours before check in to be told that our booking has been cancelled, as they’ve got a NHS contract to fulfill, to which i was totally gutted.... after time to think about the way I was treated, and the feeling of being tossed aside, I decided to complain. To which I had to phone the owning hotel, ‘The Hillbark’. When i spoke to the lady that I needed to speak to (Lisa), and tried to explain the rigmarole that I had gone to, to book a room with their sister hotel, and tried to make an official complaint, and at no point was a apology given or even offered. Instead she decided to argue with me, and when I asked if there was something she could help me with, all she went on about was it was a matter of national security, to which, and I admit, I lost my cool. I also know of somebodies wedding party happening the same day, who’s guests hotel rooms have also been cancelled for the same reason. Obviously a couple of weeks contract with the NHS outweighs local support, and I for one, will never ever spend a penny in either of their hotels again!

Came for afternoon tea, to be honest I think they’d forgotten they had a booking. Sandwiches were soggy, cakes tasted like they’d been frozen and thawed out. Scones were nice but clotted cream was like butter. Overall would not recommend or return.

A pleasant environment, rooms do not have coffee making facilities nor do they have fridges. Spacious grounds in a wonderful village with a fabulous a art gallery. Quiet but understaffed, Reception is not always manned, there are very good members of staff who understand their customers (like Joshua who made dinning a real pleasure), others when asked things either never came back with an answer or did not know.
The food was excellent, well presented, wine list was reasonable. Other drinks were fine. As a venue for weddings, etc it works well

Champagne Afternoon Tea
The hotel is beautiful and a great setting for afternoon tea. Craig our waiter was wonderful and attentive . Couldn't do enough for us. Whilst waiting he gave us some history books on Port Sunlight very interesting. Sandwiches and cakes were amazing washed down with pot of tea and a glass of champagne.
Would recommend this to anyone what a delightful afternoon .
